What is the difference between management and leadership and do we need both? Fiona Hudson-Kelly an award winning entrepreneur believes there is a difference and that we need our managers to become stronger leaders. She uses an extract from Steven Covey to explain the difference:-
The army was strong, well motivated and resourced. To proceed they had to get through a dense jungle, so they organised themselves with sharp saws, rotas to get rest and plentiful supplies of fresh water.
After two hours of hard labour their leader suddenly told them to STOP.
The men were horrified. ‘Stop?’ they cried, ‘But we are making fantastic progress.’
Their managers proudly explained how well managed they were with their sharp saws and fresh water supplies …. But their leader simply replied ‘We must stop immediately’.
The men put down their tools and turned to him, aghast: ‘Why?’ they asked.
Because, replied their leader,
who had climbed to the highest tree
in the jungle, ‘we are chopping
down the wrong jungle!’
Fiona believes that good management skills can be taught and too often people are promoted to management positions because they are good at what they do and aren’t prepared for achieving challenging goals through other people not just themselves. Our management and leadership qualifications will help managers get better performance out of their people by providing a nurturing but challenging environment where people feel valued and want to do their best.
